Michael Boatwright, a Navy veteran from Florida, was found unconscious in a California motel in February. When he woke up in the hospital days later, he had no memory of his past and said his name was Johan Ek.

Doctors believe a traumatic event may have triggered the confusion – the relatively rare disorder called transient global amnesia often goes away on its own, but can take several months.

The Associated Press reported that he was found with a duffel bag of exercise clothes, a backpack and tennis rackets. He carried four forms of identification: a passport, a California identification card, a veteran's medical card and a Social Security card – all of which identified him as Michael Thomas Boatwright.

According to Lisa Hunt-Vasquez, the social worker assigned to his case, he doesn't remember how to exchange money, take public transportation, or seek temporary housing like homeless shelters or hotels.
